Explainer : UN Security Council meeting on “humanitarian situation” in Ethiopia

Last week the UN Security Council discussed the “humanitarian situation” in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

AFP reported, in a breaking news coverage, that meeting regarding Ethiopia ended without agreement.

Two permanent members of the council (namely China and Russia) and one non-permanent member (namely India) reportedly voted against what was to be produced after the meeting.

What was the context of it and what is the implication? Ethiopia’s Representative at the UN, Ambassador Taye Atske Selassie explained it in an interview with Sisay Agena of ESAT.

Addisu Abebe – his life as a deacon, teacher and journalist

Addisu Abebe worked for Ethiopian radio in the 1980’s before he immigrated to the United States where he worked as a journalist for the Voice of America Amharic service.

Before his time at Ethiopia radio, he was a teacher. Also, he served as a deacon a boy for about nine years.

In an interview with Dereje Haile, Addisu Abebe reveals his life as a journalist.

Fiancé and friends of slain Buna Club enthusiast and Philanthropist, Tewdodros Abebaw, intend to continue his philanthropic legacy.

He was stabbed to death in the capital Addis Ababa last week while he was working on Ride (taxi) service.

His fiancé, Hiwot, and friends appeared on Seifu EBS. They shared how they are feeling, what they are doing currently and what they intend to do in the future.

Meet Ye Habesha Jebdu book translator Techane Jobre Mekonnen

Ye Habesha Jebdu, a book translated from Czech to Amharic, is certainly one of the most popular book and a first hand account of Ethiopia’s struggle against fascist Italy.

Techane Jobre Mekonnen is the translator. He studied in Czech republic. Now back in Ethiopia and living in Gohatsion.

Kazanchis and Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP)

The red terror is a black stain the history of the Ethiopian Revolution which ended the imperial government of Ethiopia.

Thousands of young people had been massacred in what was said to be Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam’s response to white terror by Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP).

Dereje Haile’s interview with Nesibu Sebhat below highlights EPRP’s history in Kazanchis , a neighborhood in the capital Addis Ababa, among other things. The social misery the struggle brought about including antagonism between friends, the role of women, women who worked in bars and the role of mothers are highlighted too.

Adanech Abiebie on Seifu Show

Acting mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebie, appeared on Seifu on EBS comedy show on Sunday.

She talked about herself, family and career, among other things. The host also posed a question about the issue of Addis Ababa ownership.

It is now a public knowledge that it that residents of Addis Ababa are even doubted as an entity with a right over Addis Ababa after radical political elements with the core of the ruling party and in the opposition claimed ethnic Oromo exclusive right over Addis Ababa.

She lightly answered, “Addis Ababa belogs to you, to me, to them[pointing to the audience]”

Tigray update as revealed by Let. General Bacha Debelle

Let. General Bacha Debelle on Tuesday gave Tigray update – specifically about the conflict situation with Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) guerrilla forces.

He said eight units of guerrilla forces under TPLF leaders is annihilated and training facilities near the areas they operate destroyed. They are not in a position to sustain guerrilla war, he said. Soon after the Ethiopian army took control of Mekelle city in late November 2020, Chief of staff of the Ethiopian Defense Force General Berhanu Jula said same thing. And months after TPLF fighters seem to have some military capacity to attempt a guerrilla warfare.

Let. General Bacha too sees no capacity to challenge the Ethiopian army. He asserts that there is no way for TPLF leaders to escape to Sudan.

General Getachew Nadew, Major Paulos Getachew a father and son in the Ethiopian army – a piece of Ethiopian history – (MUST Watch !)

Dereje Haile’s Benegerachin lay show – which is aired in Arts TV – is truly a gem for Ethiopians.

In his show this week, he is featuring a story of a father and son in Ethiopian army. It is a piece of Ethiopian history through which we see some of the key incidents immediately before, during and after the Ethiopian revolution.

Best of all it is a story from primary source. Major Paulos Getachew reveals about his father General Getachew Nadew who was killed after the Ethiopian Revolution. The son also gives testimonials about Colonel Mengistu’s relation with Gen. Getachew Nadew. The latter described him as a genuine soldier with a true heart for Ethiopia.

Among other things, Ge. Getachew Nadew was administration head of Eritrea and is said to have contacted Isaias Afeworki, now president of Eritrea, for a conversation in Asmara.

Again this video is not just a story of father and son in Ethiopian army. It is a piece of Ethiopian history. Watch it share it.

Enough to Count dead bodies and calculate the number of innocent deaths

Days after alleged restoration of calm to areas in North Shoa and South Wollo that came under Oromo Liberation Front militant wing, the government has not yet disclosed the number of ethnic Amhara people killed during the attack. What is known so far is that more than 250,000 people are displaced from towns affected by the incident.

Ataye eye witness says heavy weaponry was used during the attack

An eye witness account from Ataye coordinated attack confirmed that a heavy weaponry was used during the attack which happened last week for the fifth time.

It is to be recalled that government authorities have confirmed that Ataye city is entirely destroyed.
