Dubai : Ethiopians celebrated Medemer Day

Last weekend, Ethiopians in the United States came together in three US cities ( Washington, Los Angeles and Minnesota) to celebrate Ethiopian Prime minister Abiy Ahmed and his governing principle, Medemer which translates to unity.

Yesterday was Dubai ‘s turn to celebrate Medemer and Ethiopians came together irrespective of ethnic or religious background to express support to the prime minister administration, reform measures and vision to bring about unity among Ethiopians. Watch the video below.

Ethiopian and Eritrean friendship event at the Ethiopian Embassy in Riyadh

Ethiopians and Eritreans organized a friendship event at the Ethiopian Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to celebrate what Ethiopia and Eritrea have achieved in terms of restoring peace to between the two countries after two decades of a state of war situation.

Leaders of the two countries have agreed not only to end the state of war but also to transform the relation to a mutual cooperation and support politically,economically, socially,culturally and otherwise. The Airlines of the two countries have already started flying to Asmara and Addis Ababa.

People to people relation is already started. Ethiopians travelling to Eritrea and Eritreans travelling to Ethiopia. Families separated after the conflict over two decades ago are uniting. Likewise, Ethiopians and Eritreans in North America, Europe and the Middle East are celebrating the peace agreement between the two countries and seem to be hoping the best is yet to come.

“Those who say Ethiopia and Eritrea are two have failed to understand the situation. We are one,” said president at the Millennium Hall in Addis Ababa last month.

Ethiopians demand federal government to protect civilians in Jijiga

Ethiopians protested in the capital Addis Ababa to demand Federal government to protect civilians in Jijiga where there has been violence and ethnic and religious based attacks and killings in the last three days.

So far, at least 29 people are killed and more than ten churches burned based on VOA and BBC Amharic reports. Yesterday, 9 people are killed in Dire Dawa (four of them children.)

Somali scholar discusses Abdi Illey’s madness

Abdiwasa Abdullahi Bade, Political Science and International Relations lecturer at Addis Ababa University, appeared on EBC to discuss the situation in Jijiga.

He tends to think that the horrifying situation we witnessed this week in Jijiga need to be seen in “context” and stretches back in time to discuss Abdi Mohammed Illey, who is reportedly detained by Ethiopian defense force, and what he has been doing for the last ten years.

PM Abiy Ahmed visited Abune Merkorios in the capital Addis Ababa

Abiy Ahmed visited Abune Merkorios in his residence at patriarchate palace premise in the capital,Addis Ababa. He said Abune Merkorios is in a good condition.

Abiy wants the church to have a conference, like the one organized at the Millennium Hall, in other parts of the country as well and for the church to pray for peace in Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian Church as already ordered fifteen days of prayer and fasting for peace in Ethiopia.

Prime minister Abiy Ahmed played a crucial role for the return of Abune Merkorios. I visited him this morning because I promised him that I would visit him but I did not have time due to the situation in the Eastern parts of Ethiopia, Abiy told journalists.

ESAT Eletawi : Gedu Andargachew unveiled his stand on the Question of Wolkait

In a meeting with Bahir Dar University lecturer, Amhara regional state president Gedu Andargachew was compelled, morally, to unveil his stand on the Question of Wolkait which the Tigray regional state under the leadership of TPLF wanted to make it appear a controversial matter while it is clearly a matter of identity and that the district was under Gonder region.

ESAT Eletawi team reflected on Gedu Andargachew’s bold stand on the question of Wolkaite.

How do Somali religious leaders feel about the incident in Jijiga? Watch.

Ethnic-based violence allegedly orchestrated by regional authorities brought about havoc in cities Jijiga, Kebri Dehar, kelafo and other towns in the region. Too many families were devastated by the attack.

Apart from looting businesses, more than 10 Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Churches and Protestant churches were burned. At least 29 were killed and more than 100 wounded in the attack.

Somali religious leaders in Jijiga spoke to journalists regarding the incident over the weekend and how they felt about it.

“There has been worse conflict in the region during the Ethio-Somali war and there is no history of burned churches…what happened was an organized move from Jijiga to Kelafo, in a matter of hours, to create an inter-religious violence between Muslims and Christians in the region, and we all condemn it,” said a Somali speaking Muslim religious leader in Jijiga.

Speaking in Somali to journalist, another Somali Muslim from Jijiga said, “As a Somali, we are ashamed of what happened in the region.”

Some tend to think that perpetrators of the attack acted in a manner that they have support from elsewhere.

Working on army reform, Dr. Abiy Ahmed tells graduating military officers

Prime minister Abiy Ahmed attended what Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation says is the 12th graduation of high ranking military officers.

A total of 130 high ranking military officers have graduated from a two years and a year long programs. Ten of the graduates are from neighboring countries (Brundi,Sudan,Puntland and Somaliland)

The prime minister, and his chief of staff of the defense force, told graduates that government is working on military reform to build a “professional army.”

Tamrat Layne’s Wife- Mulu Girmay recounts experiences of abuse by TPLF. Watch,

Mulu Girmay, the wife of former Ethiopian prime minister Tamrat Layne, recounts her experiences of abuse in the hands of TPLF, virtually comrades whom she fought with against colonel Mengistu Hailemariam’s government before 1991.

She held a position in the EPRDF office in the capital Addis Ababa until she was accidentally terminated following the arrest of her husband sometime in 1997 on an alleged grounds of corruption involving US $16 million dollars.

Based on her interview with Nahu TV, there was what an apparent move to abduct her and her children up on their arrival in Ghana. Watch her interview below.

“Authorities must respect law,people and their religion” says PM Abiy Ahmed

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with Somali Ethiopians for the third time. What has happened in the region recently does not represent the people, he told the audience drawn from 11 zones in Ethiopian Somali region, activists, and youth, among others.

He boldly put the blame on the administration. “Authorities must respect the law,people and their religion,” he added.

The Ethiopia Somali region has now got a new president and Ahmed Shide,who is the Federal Government Communication Affairs Minister, is now the new chairman of Ethiopian Somali People’s Democratic Party.

Tamagne Beyene celebrated at Millennium Hall

Tamagne Beyene returned to Ethiopia two days ago after 22 years in exile. The day he arrived he was celebrated at the National Theatre where he worked for years before he left the country. Yesterday, he was celebrated at the Millennium Hall in the presence of politicians including Gedu Angargachew and other dignitaries.

He conveyed a message for the unity of Ethiopia and called on Jawar Mohammed, an Oromo radical ethno-nationalist with well over a million followers on facebook, to work together for the unity of Ethiopia only to get scoffed by Jawar.

The Milennium Hall was full to capacity and was mostly full of young people from all walks of life.

Tamagne left Ethiopia as a comedian and actor but returned back to Ethiopia as a human rights activists as he was organizing hundreds of campaigns to condemn Human Rights Violations. In exile, he also founded Global Alliance for the rights of Ethiopians to support victims of rights abuse and other needy Ethiopians.

Abiy Ahmed speaks about his trip to China and Eritrea

Ethiopian prime minister spoke about his trip to China and Eritrea. In China, where he went to attend China-Africa Cooperation Forum, he negotiated and secured delayed pay back time for borrowing used to finance Ethio-Djibouti new railway line. Initially, initially it was to be payed back in ten years. According to the new agreement, the pay back time is extended to thirty years. Also grace period for the loan also is delayed.

In Eritrea, Abiy Ahmed raised the Ethiopian flag in the premises of new Ethiopian Embassy along with president Isayas Afeworki. He also visited Massawa and Assab ports. In Massawa, he saw Ethiopian ship, Mekelle, loading Eritrean Zinc for delivery in China. Road transport from Assab to Ethiopia is expected to be open soon, based on his statement. The Zalambessa road is also to be repaired soon to enable road transport between the two countries.

As well, he signed tripartite summit and signed agreement (Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia) Growing the economy of the region is becoming a priority for leaders in the region .

Addis Ababa Stadium was full to capacity for Arbegnoch Ginbot 7 welcoming ceremony.Politicians including the mayor of the city attended the ceremony. The party has a strong support based in Addis Ababa city. Supporters carried Ethiopian flag that was outlawed by the Ethiopian government.

Ethiopian New Year Message from PM Abiy Ahmed

As Ethiopians celebrate eve of the Ethiopian New Year 2011, an event was organized at the Millennium Hall in the capital Addis Ababa today.

Leaders of political parties who recently returned to Ethiopia after years of exile including Berhanu Nega and Andargachew Tsige, high ranking government officials including president of Amhara regional state (Gedu Andargachew) and president of oromo regional state ( Lemma Megersa) were among the attendees.

The event was officially organized by the government of Ethiopia and PM Abiy Ahmed made the following speech.

Addis Ababa residents took to the street to condemn Burayu massacre

Residents of Addis Ababa took to the street today to condemn the killings of innocent civilians in Burayu. Dozens were killed and many others wounded. A pregnant women was rapped who later died in hospital.

Protesters demanded government to protect the safety and security of civilians.

Lemma Megersa has this to say on Burayu attacks

Lemma Megersa, Oromo regional state president, remarked on the killings in Burayu. “No one has the right nor authority to chase Ethiopians.”

From what he said, there was also a plan to incite ethno-religious based attacks in Assela.

He also said that more than 200 suspects are detained so far in connection with the incident and that about 300 displaced people have returned to Burayu.

Lemma blamed groups he didn’t name for relentless effort to bring about ethnic based violence between ethnic Amhara and ethnic Oromo.
