Gedu Andargachew ,president of Amhara region of Ethiopia,has made a remarkable speech at the rally in Bahir Dar which was organized in support of Prime minister Abiy Ahmed’s reform measure.

“Gamblers [political] from the old and dark age who are sleepless about the reality of our unity are relentlessly working to disturb our peace. But they did not succeed.” Gedu told the crowd at Bahir Dar Stadium.

Support rallies for prime minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration are still going on across the country. Bonga, in Southern Ethiopia, had a remarkable one decorated with Ethiopia’s historic flag. Six hundred meters long flag was hoisted.

“The changes we have witnessed since Abiy Ahmed became prime minister are something that could not be achieved in seventy or eighty years,” says one of the residents who took part in the rally.

“No border between Eritrea and Ethiopia hereafter,” PM during his speech at the state dinner in Asmara

Ethiopians and Eritreans indeed witnessed a day when leaders from the two countries hug one another and talk about how best to transform the relationship between the two countries in a way that benefits all.

The warm reception that Prime minister Abiy Ahmed received in Asmara, and it is understood- rightly – as a reception for Ethiopian people, seem to suggest that the last twenty years marked by a state of no-war-no-peace were informed by illusions of the border.

PM Abiy Ahmed made a point today at state dinner when he demolished the imaginary border and told his host, Eritreans, that there is no border hereafter. Apparently, he meant the free movement of people and services but it also speaks to the artificiality of the border. Abiy Ahmed’s speech in Eritrea : Must watch

In about eight minutes of speech during his visit in Asmara, Abiy Ahmed managed to depict the feelings of Ethiopians towards Eritrea and the vise versa.

If the current level of mutual understanding takes root, of course it needs an extraordinary commitment – a commitment that surpasses the commitment for “no-peace-no war” in the last twenty years, Ethiopia and Eritrea undoubtedly have a bright future ahead of them.

Ethiopian Church (Orthodox Church) making history

Just like Ethiopia and Eritrea made history by leaving hostility and conflict behind to usher to a new era of cooperation, Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church ( otherwise known as Ethiopian church) is poised to make history by ending schism within the church.

And Ethiopia’s new leader, Abiy Ahmed, has served as a catalyst for that to happen. Yesterday, Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo church sent delegates to the United States with a mission to finalize talks with leaders of the patriarchate of Ethiopian church based in the country.

The church was divided following take over of power by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in 1991. Ever since, the Ethiopian Church has two patriarchate while there is no theological difference.

The delegates met with PM Abiy Ahmed before they leave for the United States and he reportedly made them pledge that they will not return to Ethiopia without having leaders of the patriarchate based in the United States along with them.

The prime minister himself is traveling to the United States at the end of this month for the sole purpose of meeting Ethiopians living in the United States.

Kassa Kebede returns from Ethiopia after meeting PM Abiy Ahmed

Kassa Kebede, who served in different capacities under colonel Mengistu Hailemariam’s government, left Ethiopia just two days before Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) took control of Addis Ababa on May 20,1991.

He returned to Ethiopia at the end of last month after 27 years. In Ethiopia, he had the opportunity to meet with new Ethiopian prime minister,Abiy Ahmed, and Deputy prime minister, Demeke Mekonnen, among others. In an interview with ESAT’s Sisay Agena, he reflects on his observation in the country and others issues.

Frankfurt support rally for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed

Ethiopians in Frankfurt organized a rally to demonstrate support to the leadership of prime minister Abiy Ahmed and the reform measures he is taking. They were joined by some Eritreans as well. Demonstrators hoisted both Ethiopian flag, which is not to be confused with Ethiopian government flag which bears blue pentagram in the middle, and Eritrea flag. Similar support rally took place this week in London, Stockholm and other European cities.

Ethiopian-Eritrean wedding making news now

Had it not been for the state of war in the last two decades, wedding of couples from Addis Ababa and Asmara would not have been seen as something exceptional.There was time, in our age, that it used to be just like a wedding of couples from Sidamo and Shewa

The wedding of Teddy Tadesse and Venus Hagos was given coverage by Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation Sunday entertainment program.

What is special about it is not that it happened when Eritrean president Isayas Afeworki arrived in Addis Ababa for a three days visit some two weeks ago ; perhaps other weddings happened on that day in the capital and/or the rest of Ethiopia as well.

What made it special, at least from the point of view of producers of the program at EBC and perhaps from the point of view of the young generation who are in their twenties, is that the Bride and Groom are from Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Given the last two decades of state of war between Eritrea and Ethiopia, it is understandable if the wedding is seen as special. But again, there have been new marriage relation between Ethiopians and Eritreans in the last twenty years, at least in the diaspora.

Had it not been for the past two decades, the wedding of Teddy and Venus would have been seen as many other weddings of couples from Asmara and Addis Ababa as it was absolutely normal. After all, Eritrea itself was a part of Ethiopia.

GERD dam project manager Simegnew Bekele found dead

Relentless Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam project manager, Engineer Simegnew Bekele, was found dead this morning( 8:20 a.m. local time) around Meske Square.

Police confirmed that he died of bullet. He was found behind the wheels holding a handgun in his right hand. Ethiopians do not seem to believe that Simegnew Bekele took his own life. Rather, it is widely believed that the engineer was assassinated in a meticulously orchestrated plot.

Federal police commissioner, Jemal Zeinu, told reporters this afternoon that Engineer Simegnew was seen around 7:30 a. m. local time. He added that police has collected forensic and other evidences relevant for the investigation and will disclose the result to the public as soon as it is available.

Social media reports indicate that the engineer had an appointment with people from state media and he was meant to speak about progress of the project.

Currently, the body is st. Paulos hospital in the capital Addis Ababa for postmortem examination. Earlier funeral arrangement was made for tomorrow but was changed later, and it is to be announced.

Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church reunited after 26 years

Ethiopian Orothodox Tewahdo Church declared its reunification officially yesterday from Water Gate Hotel in Washington DC where prime minister Abiy Ahmed was present to witness what many called a remarkable achievement for Ethiopian church.

The 4 th patriarch of the church, Abune Merkorios, is to end his twenty six years of exile life and return to Ethiopia with all the honors and privileges of a patriarch as in the tradition of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church but he will be serving the church by leading prayers and blessing his children in Christ, followers of the church, while the 6th patriarch (Abune Mathias) will carry out administrative functions within the church in accordance with the rules of the church. Abume Merkorios is believed to return to Ethiopia sometime this week, perhaps together with prime minister Abiy Ahmed who is in the United States to meet with Ethiopians.

Bahir Dar’s Bishop,Abune Abraham, read out the points of agreements by the two holy Synods that are reunited to form one hereafter.

Lemma Megersa was part of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s entourage to the United States where they meet with Ethiopians in three cities. He shared his experience.

He described it as “successful” and that he was personally touched by the stories of Ethiopians and the warm typically Ethiopian reception they offered. There was no difference on the basis of ethnicity so much so that even Eritreans showed up in the events to greet us, added Lemma Megersa.

“…If we are to create the new Ethiopia and transform it, if we are to build Ethiopia, we can never think about it while excluding our compatriots in the Diaspora…” says Lemma Megersa, president of Oromo regional State and one of the motors of change in Ethiopia.

And he calls on Ethiopians in the country and abroad that it is time to work together to change the lives of Ethiopians and the image of our country.

“I was in prison for two months before I appear at the parliament”Tamrat Layne

In the days following his release from prison, Tamrat Layne stated in many occasions that he was arrested due to political difference with leaders of TPLF including, it is implied, the late Meles Zenawi. But he used to avoid the details the tribulations and the secrets of his arrest.

At the time (In 1996), the Ethiopian government under the late Meles Zenawi announced that he was arrested in connection with corruption and misuse of power. Among other things, he was accused of deposition $16 million at Swiss Bank in the name of his daughter, Blen Tamrat.

Now, he revealed the circumstances under which he was criminalized, sent to Maekelawi prison and was later sentenced to 18 years in prison.

He says he was already arrested for two months before appeared the parliament for a false confession in 1996.

After the confession, he was thrown to Maekelawi where he was kept, he claims, in solitary confinement and in dark room for many several months. He also says was tortured in three occasions.
