Opposition against Tedros Adhanom briefly disrupted World Health Assembly meeting

May 22,2017
borkena,Ethiopian News

“No Tedros for WHO” shouted Zelalem Tesema ,an Ethiopian activist, disrupting the Seventieth World Health Assembly meeting which is underway in Geneva.

He made his protest voice against Dr Tedros Adhanom, one of the candidates for the World Health Organization Director General Position, before he was led out of the Assembly Hall by civilian security personnel.

Concomitantly, Ethiopians were holding a massive rally against Tedros outside of the meeting hall where World Health Assembly was having its meeting.

There has been an online protest campaign against the candidacy of Tedros Adhanom in major social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook.

Tedros Adhanom is a member of minority ethnic based party, Tigray People’s Liberation Front which is ruling the country ruthlessly despite what many say is “financed” narratives of “double double digit economic growth” even as the country is facing one of the worst famines in its history.

Tendency to see the election of Tedros Adhanom as World Health Organization Director General as a political prestige project is apparent among among Tigray Peoples Liberation Front ruling elites and their lower level cadres.

Perhaps a clear evidence for that is that Tedros Adhanom’s campaign is funded by TPLF party. There are even allegations that the regime is spending millions of dollars in fees for lobbyist to make Tedros Adhanom World Health Organization Director General.

Even ethnic Tigray alleged opposition party members, from another Tigray based ethnic party, are rallying support for Tedros Adhanom but their support campaign is, on the surface, wrapped with “Ethiopian identity.”

They are playing ethnic politics card against those Ethiopians who are opposing Tedros Adhanom. For them, those Ethiopians, which is an absolute majority, who oppose his candidacy are doing so only because he is a member of Tigray ethnic group; it constitutes about 6 percent of the entire population. But this is something that Ethiopians trashed on grounds that they were rallying support in support of ethnic Tigray opposition when he passed away. Another point they refer to is that Ethiopia’s most respected Olympic leged Mirutse Yifter was also from Tigray origin.

Why Ethiopians oppose Tedros Adhanom

The basis of opposition against Tedros, many argue, is his involvement in the killings hundreds of thousands of peaceful protestants. Last year alone, more than well over 1000 civilians are killed by the regime that Tedros Adhanom is fiercely and passionately supporting – the ethic TPLF government.

Besides, Tedros Adhanom is known among Ethiopians for incompetence and many believe that he he does not have what it takes to be a minister except for his ethnicity which gave him membership to the ruling Tigray Peoples’s liberation front – dominating the Ethiopian state economically, militarily and politically.

The New York Times recently wrote that Tedros Adhanom covered cholera epidemic.

Despite all that, big names like Bill Gates and Western Countries including the United States are rumored to be supporting Tedros Adhanom’s bid for Director Genral position in World Health Organization.

The election will take place tomorrow. Three of the candidates are scheduled to speak tomorrow before the general assembly. Tedros will speak first according to news update by WHO.

The result of the election is expected to be announced same day.

Asrat Fana is Ethiopia’s tallest man. He is 2.2 meters (7.2 f). He has been living in the United States for twenty years now. He came to the United States through a diversity visa program.

Now 58, and living in Seattle, he nostalgically recounts his time back in Ethiopia.”There was a time when I lived very comfortably for ten years in Ethiopia without a job” , laments Asrat Fana.

His love for Ethiopia resonates through his emotionally laden, cutting voice. But personally he seem to be doing fine. He he says he is happy with where he is now and about life.

Implicit in his message about loving one another is distaste to the current deepening division along ethnic lines which is given constitutional basis and administrative structure under the current Tigray People’s Liberation Front.

Ethiopians in Toronto celebrated Teddy Afro yesterday. The event, which was organised in the evening, drew a sizable crowd.

His new album has got stellar acceptance.

Society of Ethiopians Established in the Diaspora (SEED) awarded Teddy Afro and Mahmud Ahmed, another legendary Ethiopian singer, at the end of May this year.

While all the awards for Teddy are well deserved, there are concerns among Ethiopians that politicised Teddymania could make the iconic star vulnerable to the regime in power.

On a different note, there are also critical voices who tend to see the practice of westernised form of celebration, including the use of English language as a medium of communication in Ethiopian community events, as an uninformed and unconscious practice that threaten Ethiopian values. Must listen panel discussion on the notion of `Oromia special right over Addis Ababa`

Is the notion of special right politically correct?

borkena, Ethiopian Video
August 12,2017

The notion of “Oromia special rights“ over Addis Ababa has been widely discussed over social media and major media outlets.

It was first introduced to the existing constitution under article 49 and section five; but it is important to remember the circumstances under which the constitution was drafted and adopted as power negotiating tool between to ethnic based political parties – namely TPLF and its partner OPDO – without adequate public discussion. Literally, it was imposed from above.

For more than twenty-three years, the TPLF shelved the constitutional provision as it was not in its interest to use it. As the political situation in Ethiopia gets tense and TPLF got into a panic over perceived loss of consolidated power which could possibly lead to complete loss of power over Ethiopia, there emerged a need for TPLF government to dust off the constitutional provision on “Oromia special right.“ The ruling party`s council of ministers drafted regulations to hand over `special right over Addis Ababa`to Oromia and tabled it at the parliament (no opposition party has a seat). Discussion and the parliamentary decision is postponed for a date to be announced.

Meanwhile, diaspora based radical Oromo ethno-nationalists seized TPLF panic as an opportunity to advance irredentist claim over Addis Ababa (they call it Finefine). They went further to assert that it is not for the Oromos to claim special right over Addis Ababa. Rather it is “Other`s “ who should claim the special right as Addis Ababa is `naturally` Oromo land.

It is in the above context that the following part I panel discussion (it is in Amharic) between Journalist Kassahun Seboka of SBS Amharic and three other Ethiopian`s of Oromo origin is important.

Dr. Abraham Alemu, who is of oromo origin from Wellega, got to the bottom of the issue to note that the very name finefine, that is what radical oromo ethno-nationalists use, is actually an Amharic word. He bluntly added that Addis Ababa is for Ethiopia and Ethiopian`s. Emphasized in the discussion is that the notion of special right contradicts the basic constitutional and legal principle of equality.

Dr. Beyan Asoba and Ato Geletaw Zeleke also have share their take on the matter. What is your take? share it.
