What is more exciting than making things work in unlikely situations? This Mercedes lorry ,apparently in Africa’s largest Island, Madagascar,Eastern parts of Africa, will truly amaze you. From the video graphic, it took off from Ambositra and the destination is Ambinanindrano, further south still in the province of Ambositra. It is not uncommon to see really old cars and lorries working in Africa but this one seem to be exceptional. It is not giving up. So is the owner.

Short History of International Women’s Day : March 8

Evolution of March 8 as International Women Day

(March 8,2017 – Toronto) It is unlikely to find someone in the cyber world who is does not know that today (March 8) is International Women’s day. Question is how many of us are aware about the history of it and how it evolved?

The history goes back to the second half of the 19th century. Many many decades after the American Revolution ( it is also referred to as American War of Independence), the Status of women in the United States lacked essentially all forms of freedom.

Women were not assuming role and positions in the society and were restricted to domestic work. Those who worked mostly had jobs in the manufacturing sector. On March 8,1957 , women working in factories in New York staged a strike to protest poor working conditions including long working hours and low payment. That is how the struggle for the equality and freedom of women started. In a little less than a decade, there was already a resolution on Women’s professional work.

Socialists in Europe and elsewhere were active in promoting women’s right there after. The first Women’s Day was organized by Socialists in New York, United States, in 1907 and they demanded political rights for working women. But the day was organized in February, not March 8.

Clara Zetkin , German Marxist and Women’s right advocate, called for the celebration of Women’s day annually internationally ( International Women’s Day ) to honour women who struggled for equality. That was in 1910.

On March 19 of the following year, the first International Women Day was celebrated in four European countries – namely – Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. It was celebrated in a rally and over a million woman took part in it. Political demands in the rally were, among other things, right to elect and be elected for office, right to work, training and an end to discrimination – like in the form of different pay rates for same work. Later the day was changed to March 8. The revolutionary situation in Russia which later led to the overthrow of Tsarist Monarchy and the Outbreak of the Great October Socialist Revolution had a positive influence in the women’s struggle for equal rights.

Endalkachew Mekonen leading Ethiopia’s diplomatic battle for Zimbabwe and South Africa

Ethiopian Video
March 10,2017

Ethiopia provided multi-layered support for African countries during the struggle for freedom, against colonialism. A battle was also fought in the diplomatic front. As always, Ethiopia stood on the side of oppressed Africans and fought the diplomatic battles courageously. The video below shows Prime Minister Endalkachew Mekonen making a case for the freedom of Zimbabwe and South Africa at the United Nations.

The way foreign powers retaliated Ethiopia was by creating and ideologically arming dissidents in Ethiopia. These mercenary like political groups painted Ethiopia as a colonial power that colonized different language speaking groups in Ethiopia. Still, there is big noise about it from radical oromo activists. However, TPLF, the entity that is in power presently, itself was a reminiscent of foreign agitation soon after restoration of Ethiopia’s freedom following five years of Italian occupation.

Benyam Kebede and his first critic

Ethiopian Video
March 20,2017

This week Benyam Kebede, who is known among Ethiopians rather as stooge of government propaganda, criticized government for the first time. Needless to say, the critic is the least one can say about the government in power. As a “journalist” who has been working with government, probably he could say more if he wanted to.

However, even the little critic itself is questionable if he really meant it or it is just a harbinger of something that is about to happen within government. Time will tell.

For now, below is video of his critic of Hailemariam Desalenge, the Parliament and and the government in general.

Reyot commentary on Teddy Afro new music and the rage on Reyot

April 20,2917

The New Teddy Afro music, Ethiopia, is well received by his fans. But that was not the case for Reyot media, a radio broadcast based in the US that managed to build good reputation in its coverage of current affairs in its short life span.

Their commentary sounded off board for many of Teddy Afro’s fans so much so that Reyot is trashed. Others criticized Reyot in a measured way. The video below is one such critic.

To its credit, Reyot Media issued a statement today to offer a well meaning explanation. The Amharic statement is shared on facebook. The gist of it is that the critical commentary , says the statement, was intended for putting more pressure on Teddy Afro so as to make his work better. And we need to take Reyot for its words,at least once, as they have been doing some serious work that is in the interest of Ethiopia.
