Radical forces within the Oromia regional state, with apparent support from elements in the Federal and Addis Ababa administration, have been trying to impose the region’s flag and anthem on schools in Addis Ababa.
The matter triggered a resistance – political one. Nearly one hundred students and teachers are arrested, as disclosed by Addis Ababa Police, in connection with it.
According to Oromo language speakers who translated the anthem to Amharic, the song sounds rather that it is an embodiment of radical ethnic Oromo nationalist forces political ideology. It narrates about “a hundred years dirt and oppression of Oromo people.” Wondimu Ibsa, a lawyer by profession and also of an ethnic Oromo background, argues that there was no hundred years dirt and that Oromo was not oppressed.
